SharePoint Meets ECM: Doculabs Summary (2 of 5)

Peggy introduced James Watson from Doculabs who provided a brief summary of their survey about how users are deploying MOSS.

Highlights include:

1) One third of survey repsondents are considering a MOSS deployment. This number seems low to me but I guess I come at this question from an ECM perspective (I seem to have more conversations about MOSS than anything else).

2) Existing platforms - James suggested that MOSS shouldn’t be considered a competitor to existing ECM systems. We’ll see about that; certainly seems to me that many ECM customers are asking this very question and many are considering (or have started) pilots to determine which ECM functions can be replaced by MOSS.

3) What are the top challenges / questions about MOSS? - Challenge #1 is whether MOSS can be considered the one and only system of record. My answer: Not in all but the most straightforward implementations until the DoD tools are available and a body of best practice has been developed around SharePoint RM. Doculabs seemed to concur with this point.

4) Will MOSS meet all of your ECM needs? - Interestingly 46% said yes, which seems inconsistent with point 2 above; if MOSS isn’t a competitor to existing ECM tools why do half of users think it is? My take on this: Microsoft has expanded the ECM market. Small to midsized organizations that would never have considered a full-blown ECM tool are deploying MOSS (or at least WSS). This means that ECM truly has hit the mainstream and that there’s more than enough market (and use cases) to go around for everyone.

In addition to these questions, there was also a discussion about what MOSS is used for (answer: mostly collaboration), who pays for MOSS and who manages MOSS (departments vs. IT). I’m lookingforward to Doculabs 60 minute session this afternoon to discuss this in more detail.

There are a few vendor presentations going on at the moment and we’re about to take a break. ‘ll blog again once we get into the breakout sessions.

  1. Greg,

I love these summaries, Excellent! I wish I could be there. Lot of learning for me from these. I am facing some challenges in the change management piece myself.

  2. The legacy ECM market is in denial, including Doculabs. I have been to the seminars and they are missing the opportunity of a life time.
